Replacing a Kitchen Sink, Without Replacing the Countertop: A Smart, Budget Friendly Fix

When undermount sinks fail, they can be hard to replace.  Often, the specific shape of the undermount sink can’t be matched with a new one, and replacing the entire countertop is expensive.

Often, in these cases, your best bet is to remove the undermount sink, and replace it with a new drop in sink.  This is not only cost effective, but can often be done in one visit to the property.

Selecting a New Drop In Sink

When selecting a new drop in sink to replace an existing sink, the size of the sink is an important consideration.  With solid countertops like granite or quartz, they can be cut to remove material, but additional material cannot be added.  This means that the new drop in sink must have either the same or a larger profile than the existing sink.

Cutting Countertop for a New Sink

Once a sink has been selected, and it’s time to install, the countertop must be cut to accommodate the new sink.  This is a step that is best left to the professionals.  Typically, it is done with a diamond blade, and results in a significant amount of dust.  If too much is cut, or if the countertop is cracked in the process, it can necessitate replacement of the countertop.

A professional can cut the countertop effectively and minimize (but, not eliminate) the amount of dust created.

Installing the Sink and Faucet

After the countertop is cut to size, it’s time to install the sink, and connect the drains, faucets, etc.  An important part of this piece of the installation is adequate testing of the newly installed sink and other plumbing fixtures.  A professional should run water and test all connections to help ensure you won’t have leaks.
