Rental Units: How to Save Money on Locksmith Costs with Kwikset SmartKey

Each time a tenant moves out, it’s time to resecure the property.  This means changing locks and any entry codes to garages, etc.  Make turnovers easier and less costly by changing your exterior doorknobs to ones that can be rekeyed easily.

Replacing your locks with Kwikset SmartKey locks provide an easy way to rekey that takes seconds.  (And, saves a ton of money on locksmith costs!).

Here’s how simple it is to rekey after installed:

Re-Keying a SmartKey Lock

After the Kwikset Smartkey doorlock is installed, here are the simple steps required to rekey:

  • Insert the current key into the lock, turn 90 degrees clockwise

  • Insert the SmartKey Tool into the small hole next to the keyhole

  • Remove the SmartKey Tool, then remove the current key

  • Insert the new key you want to use, and ensure it’s fully inserted

  • Turn the new key 180 degrees counter-clockwise, then 90 degrees back to the starting position.

  • Test the lock and unlock function of the doorknob to ensure the re-key process was effective

Once you have the old key, new key and SmartKey there, this process takes only a few seconds, and is easily performed by a landlord right after a tenant walkthrough.

Extra Keys: Rental Pro Tip

Save those extra keys when you get your doorknobs installed and do an initial rekey!  When a tenant moves out, you’ll need another key with a different tooth configuration.  Having multiple spare keys makes it easy to re-key, right when a tenant moves out.  No need to wait for a locksmith to arrive, you can have your property rekeyed in minutes!
