Door No Longer Opens?  It Might Need Adjusted

Sometimes, interior doors no longer close over time.  Homes can experience natural settling that can impact the alignment of your doors.  And sometimes, after re-painting a house, the additional layer of paint can add just enough extra width to the door that it no longer closes.

Fixing the Interior Door

The fix to this issue can be simple or complex, depending on how the house has shifted.  Sometimes, a door that has tilted due to the weight of the door (otherwise known as a sagging door) just needs another screw at the top to get it re-aligned.  This is a best case scenario, and a relatively easy fix.

Sometimes, the actual frame of the house has shifted, and the door casing must be removed, and then re-installed in a new position to get a good fit.  After getting the door casing re-installed, there is typically a need to recaulk and repaint the door frame to finish the project.

Another solution in certain cases is to trim the bottom or the top of the door.  Sometimes, removing just a little bit of material will let the door work appropriately again.
