Hot Water Heater Maintenance: Flushing a Hot Water Heater

For most people, hot water heaters are out of sight, out of mind…. Until they leak or no longer heat water appropriately.  But, just like any major appliance, your water heater needs regular maintenance to run efficiently and last as long as possible.

One of the most effective ways to ensure it is properly maintained is a yearly hot water heater flush.

Why Hot Water Flushing Matters

Over time, mineral deposits and sediment settle to the bottom of the tank - especially in areas with hard water, like Arizona.  This buildup makes your hot water heater work harder, and heat water less efficiently.  Left unchecked, it can even lead to corrosion, heating element failure, or tank rupture.

How is a Hot Water Heater Flush Performed?

When we perform a hot water heater flush, we start by turning off the power (or gas) to the hot water heater.  Then we turn off the water going into the hot water heater and attach a hose to a special spigot on the hot water heater.  We drain some of the hot water to begin removing the sediment.  Then, we turn back on the water, continuing to let water flow out of the hot water heater until it runs clear.  This ensures the maximum amount of sediment possible is removed from the hot water heater.

If you can’t remember the last time your hot water heater was flushed, now is the time!  Send us a message at service@epichomerepairs.com, and we’ll get you scheduled for your next one.
