Fixing a Foul Problem: Replacing Wax Rings on Toilets That No Longer Seal

If you’ve noticed your toilet rocking, or water pooling at the base of your toilet, then you may have a problem with how your toilet connects to the drain.  The culprit is often a failed wax ring, and sometimes a bad toilet flange too.

What is a toilet wax ring?

A toilet wax ring is the seal between the toilet and the drainpipe below.  It prevents leaks, blocks sewer gases, and helps ensure your toilet stays firmly attached to the floor.  Over time, the wax ring can compress, shift or deteriorate, leading to

  • Water leaking from the toilet base

  • Unpleasant odors in the bathroom

  • Floor damage from hidden moisture

  • A loose or unstable toilet

Could you have a bad toilet flange?

In addition to the wax ring that seals between the toilet and the floor, there is a flange on the drainpipe that the toilet bolts onto.  If water has been allowed between the toilet and the floor, this flange could degrade, leading to a poor connection between the toilet and drainpipe.

If the flange is not fixed prior to installing a new wax ring, it’s only a matter of time before the wax ring connection fails.

Why act quickly when a toilet wax ring needs replaced?

Ignoring a leak from the toilet could lead to bigger problems - subfloor rot, mold growth, and even a ceiling leak (if the toilet is upstairs).  Repairing the issue promptly is critical to protecting your home.
