Choosing your new fan - Key Considerations

  • Choose a fan that compliments your room’s decor.  There are various styles, from traditional to modern, and a range of finishes and colors.

Fan blades may be made of different materials: Wooden blades tend to be quieter, while metal blades tend to be more durable

  • The size of the room determines the fan size that you need.  Typical room sizes and suitable fan sizes for these rooms are below:

    • Rooms up to 75 sq ft: 29’’-36’’ fan

    • Rooms between 76-144 sq ft: 32’’-46’’ fan

    • Larger Rooms up to 225 sq ft: 44’’-50’’ fan

    • Larger Spaces: Consider a fan over 50’’

These are general guidelines - you can typically confirm the appropriate size room for the fan on the box, or check with the manufacturer.

  • Consider how you want to control the fan. Common options include pull chains, wall controls, and remote controls.  Some modern fans may also offer smart home integration

  • Depending on your ceiling height you may need a flush mount ceiling fan or a downrod for higher ceilings.  Flushmount fans are recommended for ceilings under 8ft.  Typically, the mounts supplied with the ceiling fan are suitable for ceilings up to 9ft tall.

For taller ceilings, an extended downrod may be purchased separately from the fan itself.  Below are recommended downrod lengths for taller ceilings:

    • 10ft ceiling: 12’’ downrod

    • 11ft ceiling: 18’’ downrod

    • 12ft ceiling: 24’’ downrod

    • 13ft ceiling: 36’’ downrod

    • 14ft ceiling: 48’’ downrod

    • 15ft ceiling: 60’’ downrod

    • 16ft or higher ceiling: 72’’ downrod or longer may be needed

For safety, it is recommended that the fan blades be at least 7ft from the ground.

For sloped ceilings, ensure the fan is compatible with an angled mount.
