What is a GFCI Outlet?

A Ground-Fault Circuit Interrupt (GFCI) outlet protects you.  It actively measures how much power returns through the proper path.  If it detects that some power is going somewhere it shouldn’t, it instantly turns off the power.  This makes it much less likely that someone will receive an electric shock from something plugged into an outlet that is GFCI protected.

Where should a GFCI be installed?

Typically, GFCI outlets are installed in places where water is frequently present.  Having water present increases the risk of an electric shock, and the GFCI outlet brings that risk back down.  Common places these outlets are utilized include around pools, kitchens, and bathrooms.

Special Considerations During Installation

When a GFCI outlet is installed, it protects not only anything plugged into the GFCI outlet, but also the other outlets further down in the circuit.  When installing a GFCI outlet, it is important to install it on the first outlet of the circuit, so that you receive the most protection.

Testing/Resetting a GFCI outlet

A GFCI outlet has a feature to test whether it is still working, and a button to reset the outlet if it ever detects a fault and shuts down the circuit.  These are typically on the front of the outlet.  Pushing the button marked “test” results in a test of the outlet.  After the test, there is a button marked “reset” that resets the outlet after it has shut down a circuit.

If the outlets in a bathroom or a kitchen are not working, that may mean that the GFCI detected an earlier fault, and has shut down the circuit.  If this is the case, then getting the power back on is as simple as removing the cause of the fault, then pressing the reset button on the GFCI.
